Sun Belt signs new deal with ESPN

The Sun Belt announced a new deal with ESPN today. The contract will give the Sun Belt at least two football games on ESPN or ESPN2 and four basketball games on one station or the other.

ESPN will continue to carry the Sun Belt men’s basketball championship game, while the women’s teams will be guaranteed games on ESPNU.

I have not had a chance to look through the deal in detail, but this is a deal the Sun Belt had to get right after the “secondary bowl tie-ins” turned out to be a epic disaster. Basically they were not worth the paper they were printed on after the league made a huge deal of how important they were for the league.

The following is a link to the release that includes quotes from several Sun Belt officials and coaches from the league, including Larry Blakeney of Troy, Rick Insell of Middle Tennessee and Ronnie Arrow of South Alabama.

  1. I’m curious how this affects other schools like Troy and Wky that had side deals. From the press release it says ESPN will be exclusive for national games so I guess the others are just regional deals. Any idea when the league will put out televised games schedule?
