UNT picked in basement in Sun Belt coaches poll, despite four all-conference picks

UNT fared well when it came to putting players on the All-Sun Belt Conference team on Monday.

The coaches’ poll was a different story.

Running back Lance Dunbar, offensive lineman Esteban Santiago, defensive end Brandon Akpunku and linebacker Craig Roberston were all named to the all-conference team.

The coaches and media members who voted on the all-conference team liked UNT’s top players a whole lot more than the coaches liked the Mean Green overall. The coaches’ poll has UNT picked to finish eighth out of nine teams, ahead of only hapless Western Kentucky.

Middle Tennessee is picked to win the league, but it was close. MTSU had five first-place votes and 75 points, while Troy had three first-place votes and 73 points.

  1. Sounds like the other SBC coaches have no confidence in Dodge being able to pull UNT out of the bottom. Not a good omen.

  2. Coach Dodge isn’t getting any respect today, but I think he has taken a hard look at this team, his coaches, and himself each year and worked to address those weaknesses.

I think a lot of those coaches will have different opion of Dodge at the end of this season after Dodge’s team beats thier’s.

  3. Seems the last time the Blue Demons were initially getting all the ink the first 5 years of the SBC’s existance while UNT was getting the proverbial strawberry; anyway, during that era it was the Mean Green who rose to the occassion each of those first 5 years while Blue Demons continued getting the media’s “sexy” awards (except at the the scoreboard).
