I caught up with Tony Benford for a minute or two today and picked up a few news tidbits.
Forrest Robinson is still considering what he wants to do — stay at UNT or transfer. Everyone involved — Robinson, his mom and the staff at UNT — will talk it over. We should know something in the next few days. The 6-11 forward has a ton of talent, but struggled making the transition from Class 2A Eastland last season.
Benford will also visit with John Odoh, a Hill College center in the next few days. Odoh has signed with UNT, but is still getting used to the idea of playing for someone other than Johnny Jones and Shawn Forrest. He has only spent a couple of years in the U.S. after coming over from Nigeria.
My guess is that it all works out in the end, but it is something to watch.
I also mentioned a while back that Jamail Jones had left Marquette and is looking to transfer. UNT has been in contact with the 6-6 forward. He would be a great addition, if UNT can lure him to Denton.
Here’s his Marquette bio: Jamail Jones
Benford is still working on putting his coaching staff together. Bart Lundy was the first new hire announced. He was on the staff at Marquette and was the head coach at High Point.
UNT should be able to bring in some additional high level assistants. I will be really interested to see if UNT can land another top-notch recruiter along the lines of a Shawn Forrest.
On the football recruiting front, New Orleans offensive lineman Jason Stewart committed to Tulane over UNT.
Here’s a link: Jason Stewart
I can’t find a listing for Stewart on the recruiting websites, but I do find it interesting that UNT has battled Tulane for so many players recently. Royce LaFrance flipped from UNT to Tulane, which also landed Jordan Batiste, a defensive back UNT wanted.
