I chatted for a few minutes with Tony Mitchell today after he returned to Denton from the LeBron James Skills Academy out in Las Vegas.
Fran Fraschilla and just about every other analyst on hand pretty much said Mitchell did exactly what he wanted and needed to do during the event.
Mitchell felt good about the way he played as well.
I will have a story in tomorrow’s paper.
Mitchell talked a lot about how he improved over the summer, though practices with the new coaching staff to the time he spent on the Nike summer camp circut that culminated with the LeBron camp.
What might have been even better for UNT is the way Mitchell said that improvement would translate to next season.
“I got a lot better this summer, and I will get even better by getting into the weight room with [UNT strength coach Chris] Seroka,” Mitchell said. “Everyone has been able to get comfortable with the new staff. We are going to try to crack the top 25.
“It is about to get exciting. We have the total package right now.”
It’s not hard to see what Mitchell is talking about. Mitchell is one of the best players in college basketball, period. Chris Jones is about as good a point guard as one is going to find in any mid-major league and is probably good enough to play at most high-major schools. Jordan Williams could be an elite shooting guard in the Sun Belt level and beyond. Roger Franklin was good enough to play a little at Oklahoma State and be am impact player for the Mean Green.
UNT is just flat loaded.
Mitchell is what could make UNT a Top 25 team and he just came off a great summer.
Be sure to pick up the paper to hear more from Mitchell.
This could be a special season for UNT this fall.
