I usually don’t mention every time a break does not go UNT’s way in football recruiting, but it does seem worth posting that Red Oak tight end Jeremiah Gaines committed to another school today.
Gaines is headed to SMU, a school for which most UNT fans have a deep hatred.
I thought UNT might have a chance when Gaines cut his list of schools he was still considering to six and UNT made it. He spent a lot of time talking with Dan McCarney after UNT’s Friday Night Lights camp. Gaines also came by practice this spring with his family.
If there is anyone who could close the deal for UNT, it would have been McCarney.
Just getting into the hunt with a player like Gaines is huge for UNT and shows that things are improving when it comes to bringing in talent. Get into the hunt for enough players like Gaines, some are surely going to come your way.
On the bright side, ESPN did update its recruiting rankings. UNT quarterback recruit Dajon Williams of Pflugerville is rated No. 74 among pro-style quarterbacks in the country. We knew he was a great get for UNT when he committed. This is just another indication of just how good a get he is.
