Remember how I always said to “Trust in the Johns” at North Texas.
Well, Johnny Jones is now holding down his dream job at LSU, but the other John is still cooking along.
The UNT soccer team beat Houston 2-1 today to improve to 4-0 on the season. Michelle Young scored late to give UNT the win.
UNT lost six senior starters from a Sun Belt title team. The Mean Green keeps on winning any way.
Now, we just have to come up with another coach to trust. Requirements include multiple conference titles in a team sport and a catchy way to incorporate the name with John Hedlund’s.
Suggestions are welcome.
On the other side of the Olympic sports campus, the Mean Green volleyball team won the first of its two home tournaments this weekend and improved to 4-0. Baylor transfer Courtney Windham was the tournament MVP.
And while basketball season is a ways away, it is worth mentioning the Rivals has rated three of UNT’s incoming recruits. T.J. Taylor, Tony Nunn and Anthony Norris are all three-star rated players.
My stance on the rankings is well known. I don’t waffle depending on how UNT’s recruits are rated. It mattered when Tony Mitchell came to UNT and when some really bad recruiting classes arrived in football the last few years.
The ratings of overall classes are a pretty good gauge of how teams will fare down the line. I’m not talking about cherry picking one guy who did better than expected or one guy who was a bust. I’m talking overall here.
UNT has a good one going in basketball.
