UNT named its team captains tonight.
I meant to put some thoughts up earlier, but was hammering away at the last few pages of our preseason football magazine.
In case you haven’t seen the four guys who were selected by their teammates, here they are — QB Derek Thompson, OL Aaron Fortenberry, LB Zach Orr and DE Brandon McCoy.
Orr and Thompson were captains last year and did a good job. They wouldn’t have been picked again if they didn’t.
Fortenberry and McCoy are both feel-good stories. Fortenberry was a walk-on and McCoy served his country in the Army.
I don’t see practice these days, but from what happened in the spring, when workouts are open, I can say with certainty that all four guys are ones who have the respect of their teammates.
They should be able to keep UNT together and headed in the right direction.
That’s what you’re looking for when it comes to captains.
