One of the good guys lands on his feet — Foy to Richland JC

Bill Foy, one of the good guys and good assistant coaches who helped Johnny Jones build a mid-major power at UNT, has landed on his feet.

The former UNT assistant is now the head coach at Richland JC down in Dallas.

Foy won a JC national title at Paris JC before coming to UNT as an assistant. He brought Eric Tramiel with him. Tramiel was one of UNT’s best players for two years. Foy was a sneaky good recruiter who brought several great players to UNT over the years and was under-appreciated. He was also a key Xs and Os guy on the bench.

He got caught up in a numbers game when Johnny Jones left for LSU. Jones was going to take his right-hand man Charlie Leonard and his top recruiter Shawn Forrest. He also needed someone with connections in the Southeast and landed Robert Kirby, who spent 12 years at Mississippi State.

New UNT head coach Tony Benford brought in his own guys, which is what he should have done.

That left Foy on the outside looking the outside looking in.

It took a while, but Foy landed on his feet and doesn’t even have to move.

Don’t be surprised if Richland is pretty good in a couple of years. Teams with Foy on staff tend to do very well.

Don’t think for a minute that’s a coincidence.
