Giving Canales some props

I haven’t gotten around to mentioning it until now, but you have to give offensive coordinator Mike Canales some credit for UNT’s performance last week in its win over Louisiana-Lafayette.

I was reminded to bring it up today when ULL head coach Mark Hudspeth mentioned on today’s Sun Belt coaches call that UNT had the perfect play called on Antoinne Jimmerson’s long touchdown grab.

ULL had everyone in man coverage.

UNT sent everyone deep and then brought Jimmerson underneath in the flat. When UNT managed to block Jimmerson’s man, it was pretty much over. ULL’s defensive backs were all running deep.

Great call.

Granted, UNT had some problems in the red zone, but the Mean Green put up more yards against ULL than it had against anyone since that shootout win over Western Kentucky back a few years ago, back when defense was a foreign concept in Denton.

The remarkable thing about it is outside of UNT’s offensive line, which is really good, I doubt this team has an offensive player make the all-conference team this year.

UNT has not exactly lit it up, but Canales is doing some good things with the guys he has to work with this year.

The Mean Green’s win over ULL was just the best example so far.
