Quick Sun Belt call notes

Here are the highlights.

Brelan Chancellor is done for the year, as we already know, but UNT will find out today if he needs surgery.

UNT will find out about several other guys who left the game with injuries in the next few days. Zach Orr only played 18 snaps on Saturday. UNT has to have him against Arkansas State, which has the ability to run the ball down people’s throats.

I asked if UNT needs to get the ball to Antoinne Jimmerson more early in the game. Dan McCarney said he likes all three of his backs and that they all have been productive. He didn’t indicate UNT had any plans to change its rotation.

McCarney said Derek Thompson takes way too much of the blame when UNT loses. For what it’s worth, I tend to agree.

McCarney was disappointed in UNT’s turnover margin in its loss to Middle Tennessee.

Arkansas State coach Gus Malzahn said he likes the way his team is playing so far this year, but does not believe the Red Wolves have arrived.

The “Gus Bus” is clearly rolling, though. ASU has won three straight and can become bowl-eligible with a win over UNT.

I warned UNT fans about this at the beginning of the year. It still blows me away that there were a lot of UNT fans who didn’t know who Malzahn is. ASU is 5-3 under Malzahn this year with two of those losses coming against Oregon and Nebraska.
