Basketball notes (a look at UNT’s scholarship situation)

UNT announced a few more of its basketball signings today (the early signing period runs for a few days).

Tony Nunn is the 58th-ranked center in the country, according to ESPN. Here’s the story I wrote when he committed.

The UNT women picked up arguably the biggest signing it has in years in Candace Adams, who I wrote about earlier in the year.

UNT also signed Terra Ellison, a guard from The Colony, who averaged 14.1 points a game and 8.1 rebounds a game last year.

Mike Petersen has improved UNT’s talent level really quickly since taking over the program just a few months ago.

What could get interesting is how the situation with the UNT men’s team plays out the rest of the way. Brandan Walton is out for the year with a broken foot and will redshirt and return next year.

That puts UNT at the scholarship limit, but the Mean Green might not be done quite yet.

“We are keeping our options open,” UNT head coach Tony Benford said. “We have some things that may materialize. We are waiting on JUCO guys and may have another scholarship. We will look for another four [power forward] if we have another spot.”

UNT has commitments from JUCO frontcourt players Anthony Norris and Arthur Casimiro.

Throw in the three high school players UNT signed (Greg Wesley and Josh Friar signed yesterday) and that fills out UNT’s scholarship allotment, assuming that Tony Mitchell heads to the NBA.
