I asked UNT defender Kelsey Hodges today about what the last week has been like with the Mean Green winning the Sun Belt Conference tournament and landing a first-round NCAA tournament game with Texas Tech.
Hodges said it was like a dream come true after UNT’s players and coaches watched the NCAA selection show.
It certainly was a nice moment for UNT’s players. The group has been through its share of near misses and finally came through in the finals with a win over FIU on Sunday.
A trip to the NCAA tournament could also not have been timed much better with the Mean Green departing for Conference USA next year. UNT has been really good for years and it will continue to be good in C-USA.
There’s nothing like a little momentum for UNT as it heads to a new league, though.
The question now will be if UNT can add to the momentum it has already built.
UNT feels like it should have a good shot at Texas Tech, a school it has had some success against in other sports in the past. UNT beat the Red Raiders in men’s basketball recently and also beat Tech in football a few years ago.
UNT played Tech down to the wire in soccer on the road in 2010. The Mean Green will get another shot this weekend. If you go back a post, I put up a video of John Hedlund. He likes the matchup.
