Heck of a night in hoops

The UNT men and women put on a pretty impressive performance tonight.

The UNT women took Alabama to three overtimes before falling 88-83. A charging call on BreAnna Dawkins in the second overtime, when she took the ball to the basket for a potential game-winning shot, probably did UNT in.

Dawkins finished with 18 points in another game that showed that UNT is headed the right direction under Mike Petersen.

UNT has yet to break through for its first win over its new coach, but you get the feeling that when it does, things could start falling the Mean Green’s way. That first one is the hardest one to get sometimes.

The UNT men also looked good in an 80-66 win over IUPUI.

I questioned whether UNT was taking full advantage of an athletic roster when the Mean Green struggled a bit earlier in the season. UNT wants to run and seems to have figured it out a bit after adjusting to what Tony Benford wants to do.

Tony Mitchell had 21 points and nine rebounds for UNT, which had four players finish in double figures. Roger Franklin finished with a double-double with 13 points and 10 rebounds.
