I mentioned on the blog yesterday that rumors were heating up that Middle Tennessee would end up following UNT to Conference USA.
Adam Sparks, an old Sun Belt friend confirmed the news today
MTSU will be a good addition for C-USA. It’s a good program in a good market.
If I’m Mike Petersen, I’m kicking the nearest dog/inanimate object over the fact Rick Insell and the Lady Raiders are following me to a new league, but other than that, not a terrible deal for UNT.
MTSU is a school UNT has a history of playing through the years.
And let’s not forget that the whole attraction with C-USA in the first place was getting into a league with Tulsa, Rice and UTEP, and I guess to a certain extent UTSA, a FCS move-up.
You just have to wonder at this point how much different C-USA is going to be from a competitive standpoint than the Sun Belt. East Carolina is gone in football, while SMU and Houston are headed to the Big East in all sports. SMU is headed to its fourth straight bowl game and while Houston was down this year, it usually has a good football team and a solid basketball program.
UNT left a Sun Belt with MTSU and Florida International and is joining a new C-USA, which will include MTSU and FIU.
The in-state rivalries UNT will have in C-USA will be worth switching leagues alone.
It’s just a little harder to make the case that UNT is moving up in the world when two of the teams from the last league the Mean Green played in are making the same move.
