Tony Mitchell has a picture on his Facebook page of him going up against one of his old friends from the USA national team, a guy he backed up in the FIBA World Championships.
A guy named Doug McDermott.
Tonight, Mitchell and his old friend will be back together on the same court tonight, this time as opponents when UNT opens the season at Creighton in one of the bigger nonconference games in recent UNT history.
The Mean Green has a shot to pull off the monumental upset against the 16th-ranked team in the country and will need its star player to do a lot of the heavy lifting while facing his old teammate on the US national team.
“It will be fun to play McDermott,” Mitchell said this week. “It will be like the USA days, going one-on-one against each other in practice in the post and on the perimeter.”
McDermott started over Mitchell in the FIBA World Championships, but Mitchell said that didn’t bother him or provide him any extra motivation heading into tonight’s game.
“It didn’t bother me at all,” Mitchell said. “We were on the USA team playing for our country. Starting or coming off the bench, we were all playing for the same team.”
Mitchell and McDermott will be on opposite sides tonight when the old friends face off for the first time since their battles in practice months ago.
And while we are on the subject of Tony Mitchell, here is a link to the profile of him I wrote for today’s paper: Mitchell still a humble star
