No real zingers on the UNT front on today’s Sun Belt coaches call.
UNT head coach Dan McCarney talked a little bit about UNT’s issues defensively over the last few weeks. He said UNT’s lack of pressure on opposing quarterbacks is a team-wide problem. UNT has to get to the quarterback quicker and UNT has to play better in coverage in the secondary.
He mentioned that UNT made some mistakes in the back against ASU and turned too many guys free.
He also attributed UNT’s lack of sacks over the past few weeks to playing teams that used the quick-throw offense. Houston is a good example.
McCarney said that some of UNT’s problems are personnel issues (translation, not having the players it needs). He does not see any effort issues and said UNT has to do a better job coaching the players it has.
McCarney respects South Alabama and said they are capable of beating anyone in the Sun Belt.
USA coach Joey Jones said that UNT is well-coached and very physical. He said the Mean Green doesn’t do much, but what it does do it executes very well.
I also talked to Turner Smiley’s coach this morning. He has a lot of respect for what UNT is building under McCarney. He said Smiley is a good player and a good get for UNT. He can return kicks.
