Turner Smiley, a 6-1 wide receiver from Frisco Wakeland, called me back tonight to chat a little bit about his decision to commit to UNT.
He committed about 5 p.m. this afternoon. He was a Kent Riddle recruit.
Navy also offered him a scholarship.
UNT had an in with Smiley from the beginning. His father, Keaton Smiley, played for Iowa while Dan McCarney was the Hawkeyes offensive line coach.
Keaton Smiley spoke highly of McCarney and helped sell his son on the idea of playing for UNT.
Turner Smiley said he believes UNT is an up-and-coming program. The fact UNT is headed to Conference USA was an aspect of the Mean Green’s future he is excited about.
Smiley has been very productive for Wakeland this year, catching 60 passes for 862 yards and 12 touchdowns.
There is a 40 time floating around on the internet from a recruiting combine a few people have picked up on that is from a few years ago. Turner ran a 4.4 40 over the summer and attended one of UNT’s camps.
The opportunity for early playing time was also a factor for Smiley.
Check back in Tuesday’s paper for more.
