UNT women to try to get off the schneid here in a little bit, et cetera

Haven’t had a chance to get to the blog until now. I took a flight out to Tennessee this afternoon that sets me up for the drive to Western Kentucky.

Anyway, the UNT women’s basketball team, which is having very UNT-like luck early in the season, will try to snap a three-game losing streak to open the season tonight when it faces New Mexico in the first of two games it will play in New Mexico this weekend.

UNT has played well at times, but has not been able to get over the hump. It will be tough to break that trend today against UNM, which is unbeaten at 4-0.

UNT has some really good young players like BreAnna Dawkins and Alexis Hyder and looks to be headed in the right direction.

Here is the advance I wrote for today’s paper.

In a couple of side notes, I flipped on the TV when got to my hotel room. The Iowa State game was on. I caught a Dan McCareny reference. The announcers were talking about the years in which the Cyclones almost reached the seven-win mark.

Then I headed on over to the Washington-Washington State game. Former UNT assistant coach Eric Russell is on Mike Leach’s staff at WSU. He was on TV there for a minute during the Cougars’ big win. It will be interesting to see if that helps Leach and Russell lure a few more kids to WSU, and yes, I know about the allegations about Leach mistreating players.
