Kilgore coach on James Jones and a few notes

I had a few errands to run today and am only now getting down to getting something on the blog, but I do have a bit of late information on Kilgore cornerback James Jones.

Jones committed to UNT a few days ago.

I put in a call to Kilgore coach J.J. Eckert, who called me back after I had finished up for the day.

Eckert has a very high opinion of Jones, who he said could help UNT right away.

What might be even better news for UNT is that he is a high character guy and served as a team captain at Kilgore.

Eckert just finished his sixth season at Kilgore and has sent players to a number of Sun Belt Conference schools, including Troy and Louisiana-Lafayette. Jones is the first player from the school in Eckert’s time there to commit to UNT.

JUCO players are an important part of a lot of college teams. Look at Kansas State. It sounds like UNT might be warming up to the idea of adding a few to plug a few holes.

On the basketball front, I stopped by and talked to Mike Petersen today.

He passed along some fun stats from UNT’s loss to Oklahoma. UNT was up nine at the 17:30 mark of the second half. UNT had taken nine free throws at that point, while OU had taken seven. At the end of the game, the Sooners had shot 40, UNT had 13. OU hit one field goal in the last 12:30.

It ain’t easy being green, especially not on the road at a Big 12 school.

Petersen felt UNT responded the right way afterward. UNT’s players were disappointed that they lost, but were encouraged that they played well at times.

UNT plays UTA tomorrow. I will have more in the paper in the morning.
