Running UNT-WKU blog

Final — UNT falls 70-64 on the first game in the Sun Belt road trip of death. I will be back later with some thoughts.

Update 1:45 — WKU guard Brandon Harris is down. It looks like he hit his head on the floor. He has no idea where he’s at and can’t stand up. That has concussion written all over it. WKU is up 62-57. It’s getting late.

Update 3:18 — UNT is down 60-57 with WKU headed to the line for a pair of free throws. Jordan Williams has 15 points for UNT.

Update 4:29 — UNT is down 58-57. Justin Patton just missed a turnaround jumper. WKU has the ball and has called a timeout. UNT has gone to a 2-3 zone that WKU has really struggled against.

Update 6:31 — There’s a North Texas-ism right there for you. Justin Patton just nailed a jumper that would have pulled UNT to within 58-57. Tony Benford took a timeout right before the shot.

Update 7:47 — Well, this isn’t good. Chris Jones dove after a loose ball and is being helped off the floor. That pushes Alzee to the point.

Update 7:54 — UNT is back within one at 56-55 on baskets from Alzee Williams and Roger Franklin. Jordan Williams has 13 points for UNT. Franklin just picked up his fourth foul.

Update 9:10 — WKU has regained the lead here at Diddle, 56-51 behind Geroge Fant, who just got loose for a dunk.

Update 11:24 — UNT has taken a 49-48 lead in the second half of its game against WKU that looked like it was going to be a blowout not too long ago. And get this, UNT took the lead on a Clarke Overlander 3. The Argyle product has really struggled all season long.

Update 12:15 — UNT is on a 13-3 run and has come back from 10 down to tie the game up at 46-46 as we close on the midway point of the second half. Chris Jones has six of UNT’s points during the run and has 10 on the night.

Halftime — UNT is down 37-26 at halftime. Jordan Williams has seven points for UNT in the first half, when the Mean Green really struggled offensively.

Update 3:48 — WKU just took a timeout while leading 33-20. Jordan Williams has five points for UNT.

Update 7:48 — UNT is down 25-15 past the halfway mark of the first half. WKU has cooled off a little offensively, but UNT hasn’t gotten anything going.

Update 9:26 — WKU has now hit six 3s and is up 22-14. UNT just took a timeout. Jordan Williams has six points for UNT.

Update 11:25 — UNT is down 17-12. Jordan Williams has six early points. Tony Mitchell had a pretty spectacular put-back dunk for UNT’s last two points.

Update 15:34 men’s game — UNT is down 12-4 early. WKU has hit four 3s.

Final — WKU hangs on for an 82-80 win. Tough loss for UNT. BreAnna Dawkins had a look at a halfcourt heave to win it, but it didn’t come close.

Update 20.2 — UNT had the ball with a chance to tie the game or take the lead, but was called for a moving screen on an inbounds play.

Update 1:06 — UNT is down 78-74 after Alexis Gomez hit a pair of free throws. She has 39 for WKU.

Update 2:45 — UNT is down 73-67 and just burned a timeout to save a possession. UNT has just one timeout left. BreAnna Dawkins has 18 and Sara Stanley 16 for UNT. They are still on the floor. Alexis Hyder fouled out with 18.

Update 3:46 — UNT is down 69-65. WKU has the ball and just called a timeout. BreAnna Dawkins has 18 points for UNT and is carrying the Mean Green offensively late. UNT needs to force a couple of turnovers late.

Update 4:54 — UNT is down 68-63 following a BreAnna Dawkins jumper and has called a timeout. UNT was down eight before Dawkins converted a three-point play.

Update 6:17 — UNT is down 66-58 and just took a timeout. UNT hasn’t hit a shot from the field since tying the score at 55-55. Alexis Hyder has fouled out.

Update 7:56 — Alexix Govan has scored the last six points of the game for WKU, which is up 61-55. Govan has 32. She can flat play. Alexis Hyder has four fouls, but UNT has brought her back after sitting her for a couple minutes. UNT needs offense and Hyder has 18.

Update 10:54 — WKU is on a 7-0 run and is back up 55-49 at the second media timeout of the second half. Bianca McGee just hit a big 3 for WKU. Alexis Hyder has 14 for UNT and is headed to the line.

Update 13:12 — UNT has come all the way back from a nine-point deficit early in the second half to take a 49-48 lead. UNT has the ball out of a WKU timeout.

Update 15:55 — UNT is on a 6-0 heading into the first media timeout of the second half. Sara Stanley just hit a pair of free throws to pull the Mean Green to within 45-42. Stanley has 12 points for UNT.

Update 17:46 — UNT is back within five at 45-40 on an Alexis Hyder layup and has just taken a timeout. UNT was down nine before scoring the last four points. It will be interesting to see what UNT does out of this timeout. Hyder and Sara Stanley have 10 each.

Halftime — The first half ended pretty badly for UNT, which is down 43-36 at the break. UNT was within 38-36 before WKU scored the last five points of the half. Leasia Wright hit a free throw, but missed the second. WKU got a break when the ball went out off Acheil Tac. WKU got the ball in to Alexis Govan, who hit inside. Govan had 24 in the first half alone.

Update 3:26 — UNT is down 34-30 at the final media timeout of the first half. UNT has played pretty well offensively, but Alexis Govan is having a monster game for WKU. She has 18 points already. Sara Stanley has eight for UNT.

Update 7:31 — WKU is up 27-24 past the halfway point of the first half. WKU went on a 6-0 run before UNT answered with an Alexis Hyder layup. Laura McCoy is on the bench with two fouls.

Update 11:53 — We are all tied up at 17-17 at the second media timeout of the first half. WKU has scored the last four points. That’s the first time today either team has scored consecutive buckets. UNT caught a break. WKU had a clean shot to take the lead, but turned it over on a traveling call.

Update 15:06 — We have hit the first media timeout with UNT up 15-13 in a game that is being played at a frantic pace. Sara Stanley has six points for UNT, which has gotten the ball inside quite a bit early while pushing the ball.

Update 15:54 — UNT forced a turnover and has pushed its lead to 15-11 on a BreAnna Dawkins bucket. WKU just called a timeout

Update 17:34 — I don’t think anyone has missed yet in the UNT women’s game. UNT is up 11-8 and just took a timeout.

It’s snowing in Bowling Green, but it’s nice and toasty in Diddle Arena, where I have set up in advance of UNT’s doubleheader against Western Kentucky.

This is typically not a pleasant place for UNT to play. The UNT men are 2-6 here, while the women are 0-8.

The headline for today is the rematch of last season’s Sun Belt tourney final. WKU came back from 13 down in the second half to win and grab in NCAA tourney bid.

WKU is off to a great start at 3-0 in Sun Belt play. UNT is 0-1 in conference play and a surprising 5-7 overall in a year the Mean Green was expected to field its best team in recent memory.

WKU has won 11 straight at home. UNT is 2-for-34 from 3 in its last three games (where have you gone, Calvin Watson, Tristan Thompson, Josh White, Collin Dennis and I could go on). Not having Brandan Walton is really hurting UNT. Jacob Holmen and Tony Mitchell are the only other good shooters from 3 UNT has and Mitchell has not shot it as well from deep this year.

WKU is pretty beaten up, but this will be a tough game for UNT.

As for the UNT women, they keep getting into close games and losing them. Icelyn Elie hit a dagger 3 late to give Middle Tennessee a win over UNT in its last game. UNT is 2-9, and it won’t get any easier today against WKU, which is 10-2 and 3-0 in Sun Belt play.

UNT finally moved Loryn Goodwin into the starting lineup in its last game against MTSU. She responded with 12 points and has scored in double figures in four straight games.

Check back, I’ll update the blog throughout the day.
