Chris Loving is going to get a second chance to play football on the FBS level. The Blinn College product said tonight that he is seriously considering making UNT the place he finally reaches his goal.
Loving will take an official visit to UNT this weekend.
“I’m pretty excited about maybe playing at North Texas,” Loving said. “The coaches made it sound like a fun place to be. I know coach [Mike] Grant and talked to the new tight ends coach they just hired [Tommy Perry]. I really like the program. They said that the program is on its way up and I can be a part of it.”
Loving was an honorable mention All-Southwest Junior College Football Conference selection last season and was a standout player at Klein. The question when it comes to Loving has always been his grades.
Texas A&M, Miami, Utah, Colorado State and UTEP were among the teams that offered him a scholarship when he was a senior in high school. Loving didn’t qualify and ended up at Blinn.
Several programs showed interest in him again his sophomore season, but a few backed off when they found out he would have to stay through the second semester at Blinn before transferring.
Loving still has to pass a handful of classes next semester to pick up his JC degree and qualify to play at the FBS level.
“The coaches at North Texas think I can pass the classes that I need,” Loving said. “I would be up there in July if I commit.”
Loving caught two passes for 12 yards last season. At 6-4, 265, Loving seems like a perfect candidate to replace Andrew Power, who was a terrific blocking tight end for UNT last season.
Loving said that UNT’s coaches have sold him on the idea that he can play a larger role in the passing game as well.
“The coaches said that I would be a pro-style tight end,” Loving said. “They like my ability to line up in the slot and said I could play a role in the passing game.”
While some of the other schools that were pursing Loving have backed away, Kansas State is still in the picture.
“I just talked to Kansas State and they said they would offer if I visit,” Loving said.
Loving is scheduled to visit Kansas State on Jan. 25.
