I’m here for the UNT-USA doubleheader here at the Super Pit. The UNT women are on a roll and are in first place in the Sun Belt Conference’s West Division at 4-2. The UNT men are trying to work their way out of a horrible side and have lost five of six — not to mention half the team to injury.

The UNT men 6-11 and 1-5. The UNT women are 5-10 overall.

The USA women are 10-6 overall and 3-2 in league play. The USA men are 8-7 and 5-2.

The headline matchup today is UNT forward Tony Mitchell taking on USA forward Augustine Rubit, who is putting up 19.7 points and 11.1 rebounds a game.

It will be interesting to see if some of UNT’s injured players come back for this game, including Jacob Holmen and Justin Patton, although I doubt they do.

In a side note, UNT’s all-time leader in wins in women’s basketball is here. Tina Slinker came by to see her former player Mansa El play her final college game in Denton. El was recruited by Slinker, played one year for UNT after Slinker left, saw the hand writing on the wall and got out while she had the chance.

Slinker led UNT to the WNIT twice and is quite possibly one of the nicer people on the planet. Great to see her back.
