Fred McCain, a key figure in the history of UNT athletics as a player, coach and administrator, has died.
McCain was 90.
McCain was UNT’s starting quarterback in the last 1940s and helped lead the Mean Green to the 1946 Optimist Bowl and 1947 Salad Bowl games. He was an assistant football coach at the school from 1950-71 and later served as the school’s athletic director from 1982-87.
McCain is a member of the UNT Athletic Hall of Fame.
