UNT played one of its better games tonight and beat Arkansas State 74-50 on senior night.
The Mean Green is now locked into the no. 9 seed in the conference tournament.
Ok. Now for the news — Tony Mitchell said after the game that he will wait until after the season to decide if he will leave for the NBA. He took a few more prodding questions on the subject and seemed torn.
He could stay. He could go.
We just don’t know. And, apparently, neither does Mitchell.
I went through the entire scenario earlier in the blog.
Mitchell had a pretty good game, finishing with 10 points, 13 rebounds and three blocks.
ALzee Williams (19), Jordan Williams (16) and Roger Franklin (12) all finished in double figures. UNT also played terrific defense, limiting ASU to a season-low 50 points and 1-for-23 shooting from 3-point range, which is really, really terrible.
The return of Chris Jones was huge. He had eight points, seven rebounds and four steals in his second game back from a broken foot.
A lot of the talk after the game was about UNT’s four seniors, including Roger Franklin and Niko Stojiljkovic, who are still playing. Jacob Holmen and Justin Patton are out for the year.
“It’s hard to leave home with everything the Mean Green nation did for me,” Franklin said.
Uh, Rog, UNT’s fans are going to miss you for what you have done for the program.
Niko had a great all-around game with seven points, eight rebounds and four assists.
So now UNT is off to the conference tournament and has a load of momentum on its side.
“One of the great things about college basketball is that you can go through ups and downs,” UNT head coach Tony Benford said. “We got Chris Jones back who is one of the best point guards in this league. We feel like we can compete with anybody.”
Now UNT will get a chance to prove it.
