Did someone replace the rims at the Super Pit with hula hoops?
Just wondering because it sure looked that way at times during the UNT men’s basketball team’s win over Florida International tonight. The Mean Green shot 75 percent from the floor — FOR THE GAME — in a 77-67 win that snapped a five-game losing streak.
That’s a school record by a mile.
Roger Franklin scored 21 points and hit all 11 of his free throws. Jordan Williams and Alzee Williams both had 15.
UNT hit 84 percent of its free throws on the night.
That was the overlooked part of the whole deal. Shooting 84 percent as a team from the line is pretty impressive.
Tony Mitchell didn’t play a bunch due to foul trouble and finished with nine points on 4-of-4 shooting.
The easy thing to do in spots like this is to read too much into it. UNT still has to get Mitchell the ball. The trick to it is to make sure everyone is still getting good shots while still getting Mitchell his looks.
The women’s game didn’t go as well, despite a huge night from Loryn Goodwin.
UNT fell 72-63, even though Goodwin went off for 26 while hitting seven 3s on just 10 shots at it.
Seven makes are a freshman record for UNT.
UNT was in position to win before FIU went on a 10-2 run in the second half. FIU guard Jerica Coley came into the night leading the nation in scoring at 25.4 points a game. She’s legit and matched Goodwin with 26.
The girl who killed UNT was Martina Davydova, who had 19 points and 11 boards. She sparked FIU’s key run.
What made the situation worse for UNT was that Arkansas State, the team UNT is chasing in the Sun Belt West Division standings, somehow managed to beat Western Kentucky. UNT is two back of the Red Wolves now.
The loss really overshadowed a great night from Goodwin, who is going to be special. She can flat score, is one of the better defenders UNT has had in a long time and is one of the better spoken, mature freshmen I remember who has come through the athletic department in any sport.
She was a flat steal for Mike Petersen.
