UNT hires Ryan Walters

UNT has hired former Arizona and Oklahoma assistant coach Ryan Walters, head coach Dan McCarney said this afternoon.

Walters spent last season as a graduate assistant at OU. He was previously on the staff at Arizona.

“I coached against him when he was at Colorado,” McCarney said. “He worked for Greg Brown, Mike Stoops and Bobby Stoops. Those were his mentors. When the staff at Arizona got let go, he went to Oklahoma.”

McCarney said that Walters was the only defensive assistant on OU’s staff last season in the press box on game day.

Walters was on campus early this week and made an impression.

“He was outstanding in the interview process,” McCarney said. “He understands not just corner play and secondary play. He went to the board and showed that he understands all of what we are trying to do defensively.”

UNT’s staff saw Walters over the summer when the staff went to Oklahoma to work with the Sooners’ staff.

McCarney has a close relationship with the Stoops brothers.

Walters replaces Justin Gaines, who left the staff during the off-season.
