UNT-Troy thoughts

The UNT men escaped, barely, tonight, knocking off Troy 63-61.

Loryn Goodwin was good again, but the UNT women fell 86-69.

Tony Benford mentioned after the game that the basketball Gods smiled on UNT. Boy, did they ever. UNT appeared to have the game all but put away, before Troy rallied late and had a shot to win it after Alzee Williams missed a free throw with eight seconds left.

That 3 Jeff Mullahey took for Troy looked like it might drop at the buzzer, but bounced away.

That would have been really tough on UNT, which was whacked by Louisiana-Monroe in its last outing.

Jordan Williams played great, finished with 25 and hit seven of the nine 3s he took. There is a reason the guy was rated one of the top 150 players in the country coming out of high school.

UNT is still just 5-12 in league play, but is trying to get something going before the conference tournament.

The UNT women were whacked by a Troy team that had won just two conference games all year. Goodwin hit four more 3s and finished with 20. BreAnna Dawkins was good, finishing with 14 points.

UNT just didn’t play well enough defensively. Troy shot 55.9 percent in the first half, scored 20 fastbreak points and 40 points off a whopping 30 UNT turnovers.

The ship may have sailed on UNT competing for the Sun Belt West Division title tonight.
