UNT-USA thoughts

Well, that didn’t go well.

The UNT men seemed like they finally had something going after winning two in a row heading into tonight’s game against South Alabama. And then Chris Jones came back for the first time since late December.

If UNT was ever really going to get it going, tonight seemed like it would be it.

Jones played pretty well considering the circumstances. He had six assists in 20 minutes.

UNT lost 69-57 anyway. The women’s game didn’t go any better. UNT lost 65-61 after leading by 11 early.

Alzee Williams had 15 points and Tony Mitchell had 11 points and 11 rebounds for the UNT men.

The problem was no one else played well. Jordan Williams went 3-for-18 and finished with nine points. USA is a terrible matchup for Roger Franklin with two big, athletic guys in the paint in Augustine Rubit and Javier Carter and it showed on a night he had eight points on 4-for-13 shooting.

The best case scenario for UNT at this point is to be seeded ninth in the Sun Belt tournament.

The women’s game was another baffling one. UNT looked like it was going to roll after jumping out to an 11-point lead on USA, a team it beat by 20 earlier in the year.

Alexis Hyder had 16 and UNT brought Desiree Nelson out of mothballs and saw her score 10. That was about it for UNT, which has now lost four of five.

UNT has fallen under .500 in Sun Belt play at 9-10.
