Wednesday practice notes

I am getting to this late tonight after stopping by to see UNT’s new volleyball coach and writing a couple of stories for tomorrow’s paper. But I did get by to see a little bit of practice today.

I will have a Dan McCarney video up tomorrow and have a story about UNT’s backup defensive tackle situation that will be in tomorrow’s paper.

I missed part of today’s festivities while over at the volleyball deal, but here are a few tidbits, notes and thoughts.

The big news of the day was that Brock Berglund was back out after missing most of Saturday’s scrimmage. He was with the third team. McCarney is big on guys moving up and down the depth chart based on performance and Berglund hasn’t played a whole lot lately.

Rex Rollins is back at running back and is making plays with UNT’s backups. He scored on a 16-yard run and posted another run of about the same length.

A big chunk of the Frisco Wakeland staff was on hand this afternoon.

I am really starting to think that Chad Polk is going to play for UNT a lot at defensive end. He was out there with Aaron Bellazin on the first-team defense. He had one sack today that I saw.

Derek Thompson had a nice day again. He hit Brelan Chancellor for a 31-yard touchdown and had a 7-yard touchdown run.

Backup defensive tackle Mustafa Haboul posted a sack while working with the third-team defense.

Will Wright made a great play to tackle Chancellor for a 5-yard loss on a fly sweep.

Hilbert Jackson broke up a pass in the corner of the end zone.

Mark Lewis scored on a 4-yard run in red zone drills.

I try to never miss a chance to yak it up with the entourage of a recruit hanging around. Coppell junior offensive lineman Bill Weber was watching today’s practice.
