Sun Belt softball tourney starts Wednesday morning

It would have been easy to miss it unless one was paying really close attention, but the UNT softball team has been en fuego the last few weeks. The Mean Green has won nine of its last 12 and is carrying a load of momentum into a first-round game with Florida Atlantic in the opening game of the event at 10 a.m. Wednesday morning.

UNT got going by knocking off nationally ranked Baylor, swept Middle Tennessee and then had Ashley Kirk take over and throw two five inning no-hitters in a three-game sweep of Louisiana-Monroe.

Freshman catcher Taylor Schoblocher followed Kirk’s big weekend up with a walk-off grand slam in an 8-7 win over rival UTA two days later.

Dani Hoff kept the Mean Green’s momentum going when she launched a sacrifice fly in the eighth inning that gave UNT a 2-1 win over Stephen F. Austin to end the regular season.

UNT is 27-22 and has a shot at 30 wins, which was the goal at the beginning of the season.

The Mean Green always seems to play well in the Sun Belt tournament. Another good run this week could make for a historic season.

Stay tuned.
