Friday morning recruiting notes and FNL advance

UNT hosted arguably its most important recruiting camp of the year last night and is hours away from its biggest event of the summer.

As we talked about last night, UNT’s Talon Talent camp paid big dividends when Fonzale Davis, a wide receiver from South Oak Cliff, committed to UNT.

Friday Night Lights is tonight. The annual camp that is open to any high school player has grown over the years and is a big recruiting tool for UNT.

UNT brought its top recruiting targets in last night. Some of them will be there again today, including Waco Midway offensive lineman Christian Beard. The former SMU commit had good things to say about UNT after his first visit, which we covered last night.

Another player who is in this week is Akii Smith, an outside linebacker for Northeastern Oklahoma A&M, a school UNT has pulled players from over the years.

Smith said his visit to UNT went well:

UNT is hoping to add to its class and build a little momentum after picking up Davis, by far its most highly regarded recruit thus far. Davis had offers from several schools, including Iowa State and New Mexico State. He’s just the type of player who seems like he would fit well at a place like UNT.

UNT is the perfect fit for a lot of Dallas kids who like the idea of staying close to home and might not be a fit at a private school.

Actually, I can guarantee that UNT will add to its haul.

Check back later for some additional detail on another player and his decision to play for UNT, a choice all parties will feel comfortable talking about publicly after tonight’s camp.
