UNT’s freshmen and late-arriving JUCO transfers reported for off-season conditioning over the weekend.
A UNT spokesman confirmed that everyone who was supposed to report did just that.
That had been the word the last day or so. Once players arrive on campus and start moving into the dorms and hanging around with returning players, the word gets out pretty quickly.
It’s still good news for UNT, which did have at least one lingering question — the status of freshman defensive lineman Sydrick Moore. The former Van standout double signed with UNT and a junior college just in case he didn’t qualify.
Moore competed the classes he needed to and posted the GPA and test score he needed to pass the clearing house and get into UNT.
Moore might not be the highest rated player in UNT’s class, but he is among the most important considering he is the only defensive tackle in the class and one of the few defensive linemen. UNT also signed JUCO defensive end Quenton Brown, who was lost until at least the beginning of Conference USA play with a torn ACL.
Defensive tackle Richard Abbe has also been suspended indefinitely, leaving UNT short on defensive linemen.
Moore could have a chance to contribute right away.
JUCO tight end Chris Loving could also have a chance to contribute right away with the departure of Andrew Power. He was a late-arriving transfer who didn’t participate in spring practice.
Freshman wide receiver Darvin Kidsy could also be a player to watch among the players in the freshman class.
The important news is the class has arrived intact.
