We are headed toward the beginning of a new season when it comes to UNT football.
For those of us on the sports staff here at the DRC, it feels more like we have crossed the finish line.
Our football preview magazine will be in the paper tomorrow.
This year’s edition is 120 pages and there isn’t an iota of non-local content in it. None. I know. I designed every single page with content (those not taken up completely with ads) in the whole thing.
Granted, this is a UNT blog followed by a lot of readers who are interested only in the Mean Green. Even when one takes that into account, there are still around 30 pages of straight UNT in there.
We talk about the impact of UNT’s move to Conference USA, delve into Derek Thompson’s background and talk about where he has found the fortitude to overcome what he has faced in his time at UNT, including a broken leg, the pressure of competition from a host of players and the doubts he knows are out there about him.
And that’s just for starters.
We also have a special section with glossy pages (like in a magazine) dedicated to UNT’s move to C-USA that is filled with photos and graphics.
Our peers in the newspaper business have named the DRC’s preseason football publication one of the 10 best in the country for papers of a similar circulation size the last five years.
And you know what the best part is?
Even though we spent hundreds of hours on it and begin planning it right after basketball season (seriously, we do), we are selling it for 50 cents as a part of tomorrow’s paper.
Yeah, there will probably be a way to read it online tomorrow.
But it will be a great item to pick up at the newsstand.
