I stopped by UNT’s practice this morning and picked up a few good notes, along with a video interview with Chad Polk that will accompany my notebook in tomorrow’s paper.
Polk is an interesting story because he is way undersized for a defensive end and decidedly in the mix for playing time. I talked to Polk a little about the transition from linebacker and how he fits in.
I also thought defensive coordinator John Skladany made a great point about the rise of spread offenses and how the changes in college football have put a premium on Polk’s best assets — speed an quickness.
Be sure to pick up a copy of the paper to see the story.
I anticipated that there would be some additional fallout from UNT’s scrimmage, and sure enough there was.
I wrote about the real humdinger earlier today. Derek Thompson is taking the snaps with the first team offense (not that it should be a surprise).
Dan McCarney said freshman Dajon Williams is not out of it, but that UNT is trying to find out who is best second, third and fourth quarterbacks are.
This is just my take, but if UNT was going to run Williams out there against Idaho, it would be giving him every snap it could by now.
McCarney said Thompson is having a very good third week of camp.
One other tidbit of note is that wide receiver Darvin Kidsy has worked his way into the mix over the last few days. The freshman performed well in Saturday’s scrimmage and has continued to play well in practice.
Fred Scott is UNT’s backup middle linebacker and will play.
Fornmer Guyer safety John Schilleci will play on two and maybe three special teams this year.
McCarney gave Guyer a shout-out, saying that John Walsh runs a great program.
McCarney’s right. Walsh does run a great program.
He’s also very smart for pointing that out to someone — me — who would be sure to repeat that take to UNT fans and to our man on the scene at Guyer Adam Boedeker, who passed it along to the Wildcats’ faithful.
