I’m headed down. Be back later.
Update 8:51 — Dajon Williams is in and just hit the first pass of his college career.
Update 8:57 — Idaho just missed a field goal. Everything is going UNT’s way.
Update 11:30 — UNT has pushed its lead to 40-6 on a 30-yard pass from Derek Thompson to Darius Terrell. This is pretty much over.
Update end of the third quarter — We are headed to the fourth quarter with UNT up 33-6. Derek Thompson (284 passing yards) and Brelan Chancellor (135 receiving yards) are having good games.
Update 3:28 — Reggie Pegram just went in from two yards out to put the Mean Green up 33-6. UNT is really rolling now. Derek Thompson has 284 passing yards. UNT has 136 yards.
Update 9:22 — Andrew McNulty came in and threw an interception on a tipped pass in the red zone. UNT is still up 26-6.
Update 10:34 — Lairamie Lee just forced and recovered a fumble. UNT has the ball at the Idaho 7-yard line. UNT has recovered three fumbles on the night. I guarantee you UNT will credit that to the work it put in on its turnover circuit since the spring.
Update 12:12 — UNT is driving again to open the second half. Derek Thompson just went down with what looks like a cramp. Andrew McNuly came in and lost four yards on one play before UNT punted it away.
Halftime thoughts — UNT wanted to get off to a good start to its season at home and is well on its way to reaching that goal. The much-maligned Derek Thompson has thrown for 187 yards and Brandin Byrd has two touchdowns. Thompson has hit on all but three of his 15 attempts. Brelan Chancellor has six catches for 135 yards. UNT’s defense has forced two turnovers.
Update :45 — UNT comes up with another stop. It looks like UNT will head into halftime up 26-6.
Update 2:46 — Brandin Byrd scores from 27 yards out. UNT missed the extra point again. UNT is up 26-6.
Update 3:13 — UNT’s defense came up with another turnover as we head toward halftime. Zach Orr forced a Chad Chalich fumble that Lairamie Lee recovered. UNT has the ball at the Idaho 38.
Update 3:53 — UNT went to the well again and came up short. Daniel Prior was cut down short of the first down marker.
Update 4:19 — Zach Orr recovered an Idaho fumble deep in Idaho territory. UNT is facing fourth down at the Idaho 11.
Update 6:34 — Mark Lewis just scored from a yard out to cap a 49-yard drive. UNT is up 20-6 after missing the extra point. Derek Thompson is 11-for-14 for 176 yards.
Update 7:45 — UNT is driving and is inside the Idaho 20.
Update end of the quarter — UNT went for it on fourth-and-2 and didn’t make it deep in Idaho territory and came up short when Antoinne Jimmerson was cut down short of the marker on a shuffle pass. UNT is up 14-6.
Update 2:21 — UNT’s defense came up with another stop after Thompson’s long touchdown pass. Brelan Chancellor brought the punt back to the Idaho 40.
Update 5:12 — Derek Thompson just made one of the bigger plays of his career, at least in terms of the yards it went for. He sidestepped a rusher and found Brelan Chancellor wide open behind Idaho’s secondary for an 85-yard touchdown. UNT is up 14-6.
Update 6:30 — Big stop right there for UNT. Idaho had the ball at the UNT 20 and faced fourth-and-2. UNT came up with the stop.
Update 7:45 — UNT came right back after that stop and scored on a Brandin Byrd 1-yard run. UNT is up 7-6.
Update 10:59 — Big stop for UNT right there. Idaho goes three-and-out after recovering the on-side kick. UNT has the ball at its 20-yard line down 6-0.
Update 12:20 — Well, this has not started well for UNT. Michael LaGrone got behind UNT’s secondary and hauled in a 59-yard pass. The Vandals scored right away and recovered an on-sides kick. Marcus Trice blocked the extra point. Idaho leads 6-0.
Update kickoff — Idaho won the toss and elected to receive.
Update 5:57 — Game-time temp. 103
Update 5:42 — I will be interested to see what attendance is like at today’s game. It is really, really hot out. The hill where students set up looks a little empty, so do the stands.
Update 5:34 — Brandon McCoy is walking on the sideline in street cloths. It doesn’t look like he is a go today. I figured that was going to be the case. It looks like Aaron Bellazin and Daryl Mason will start.
Update 5:22 — One of UNT’s key recruits in the Class of 2014 is at today’s game.

It brings up a key point. UNT is 7-4 at Apogee Stadium under Dan McCarney. UNT has a chance to make an impression on recruits today. There should be a few more at the game.
We are back for another year of UNT football, and with it a live edition of the MGB. We went to a live chat last year across the board — for high school and UNT games we covered at the DRC.
For a variety of reasons, we ditched that concept (although I am not promising we won’t change course again).
I like the blog variety of live coverage any way. I was never very good at the chat way to go, mostly because I am focused on following along and writing four stories for two papers and keeping up with the drive chart graphic we put in the paper each week.
Point is, I will update the blog throughout the day.
UNT is out on the field warming up. Not that it isn’t hotter than I don’t know what already. UNT’s kickers and snappers have the throwback jerseys on. I think they look pretty sharp. I always liked that darker shade of green, although uniform talk wears me out.
As far as the game goes, this is one UNT has to win. And I fully expect UNT to win.
Idaho was not good last year and changed coaches. UNT wasn’t very good last year either, but returns the key members of its coaching staff and a ton of key players.
The interesting aspect of his game to watch is going to be the quarterback situation with Derek Thompson and (insert name here). Dajon Williams is supposed to play, but from there, who knows?
The heat is on Thompson to perform.
Check back, I will update the blog throughout the day. And if you want to send in a last-minute GYROTR guess e-mail me at firstname.lastname@example.org.
