I just finished sending in my story for tomorrow’s paper on UNT’s basketball tip-off event.
We’ll get to that in a minute, but here is the news of the day — Cincinnati transfer forward Kelvin Gaines is out four to six weeks with a foot injury. I mentioned in the running blog that he was not playing tonight.
Tony Benford said after the event that UNT considered its options and decided that it would be best for Gaines to have the injury operated on now rather than put it off and end up losing him late in the season. He should be back in late November or early December.
UNT will have to get by without a player who is expected to be a big presence under the basket until then.
Keith Coleman is really the only other true center UNT has, but with the way Benford wants to run the floor the Mean Green should be able to get by without any huge issues. Colin Voss was out with a minor injury.
I covered most of what else went on during the event, but my general thought is that it went pretty well. UNT had a terrific turnout that both Benford and UNT women’s head coach Mike Petersen credited to UNT’s promotions department. Benford gave Jamie Adams, UNT’s assistant athletic director for marketing & promotions, a shout-out, which we have just now re-shouted.
I stand by my thoughts that reading too much into an event like this is a bad idea, but the UNT men do have a lot of athletic guys who can run the floor. The same is true of the UNT women.
Armani Flannigan, Briesha Wynn, Greg Wesley, Candice Adams and Eboniey Jeter all showed signs that they could be key players for UNT this year.
And everyone left feeling good about UNT hoops, which is the whole point of deals like this.
