We haven’t discussed this on the blog yet this week, but Rice nose tackle Stuart Mouchantaf is out for tomorrow’s game against UNT.
It’s a huge break for the Mean Green.
Mouchantaf has 33 tackles, including three behind the line of scrimmage. He was injured in Rice’s win over UTEP.
Mouchantaf is one of Rice’s better defensive players and a monstrous guy at 290 pounds. Cody Bauer’s status will be a game-time decision, cutting further into Rice’s depth up front.
Former UNT recruiting target Ross Winship is expected to start in place of Mouchantaf.
One of the reasons UNT struggled to run the ball earlier this year in a loss to Tulane was the Green Wave had a huge nose tackle in LSU transfer Chris Davenport. He ate UNT alive in the middle of the line.
Mouchantaf is not the same type of player Davenport is, but he is pretty good.
Take Mouchantaf out of the lineup and UNT’s chances to be effective in the running game go up, even if running back Reggie Pegram misses tomorrow’s game as expected.
Brandin Byrd is solid and should be able to grind out yards in the middle of the line.
