8:53 — Flanigan jumps over Vertrail Vaughns to win the dunk contest. I will be back
8:50 — We have Greg Wesley and Armani Flannigan in the finals.
8:46 — A perfect 10 for Armani Flannigan on his second dunk, capped with a nice little dance. He’s turning out to be the star of the night.
8:43 — Judges for the dunk contest: Jacob Holmen, Harold Stewart, Jae Crowder from the Mavs. He played for Tony Benford.
8:38 — I told you so. Brandan Walton with six and Laura McCoy with five for 11. Close than I thought.
8:37 — Janis Peterson with three and Maurice Aniefok five for eight total
8:36 — Hannah Christian with six 3s and Vertrail Vaughns with 3 for nine total.
8:35 — UNT is going with a team 3-point contest this year. Laura McCoy and Brandan Walton are on one team. Forget about it. Laura may win this by herself.
8:33 — We are getting ready for the 3-point shootout and the dunk contest. Don’t underestimate the snipping ability of Laura McCoy. If I’m not mistaking the Blonde Bomber won this deal last year.
8:30 — Final from the men’s scrimmage. Green 38-22 over the White. Unofficial leaders — Chris Jones 14, Armani Flannigan 12, Jordan Williams 9.
8:27 — Jeremy Combs is here tonight. I just spotted him heading up the tunnel with the rest of UNT’s players.
8:22 — Really impressed with Armani Flanigan. He can handle the ball for a big guy.
8:19 — Brandan Walton with a 3. UNT missed that last season.
8:17 — Armani Flanigan has eight points so far.
8:16 — Jordan Williams threw down a pretty nice reverse dunk in the open floor.
8:15 — TJ Taylor is wearing a mask to protect his face.
8:14 — TJ Taylor and Armani Flanigan have been impressive so far in the men’s scrimmage.
8:02 — Kelvin Gaines is in a boot and will not play tonight. Gaines has some kind of foot injury. I should know more later. Colin Voss took a knee to the thigh today in practice and will also not play tonight.
7:57 — Rick Villarreal won the celebrity free throw contest. Good showing for UNT’s AD.
7:50 — Here are the unofficial leaders for the women’s game: Alexis Hyder 9, BreAnna Dawkins 7, Eboniey Jeter 6, Candice Adams 5, Janis Peterson 5.
7:42 — The White team wins the women’s scrimmage. Candice Adams had a really nice showing for her first appearance with UNT.
7:41 — Local AAU coach and UNT graduate Erven Davis is here tonight.
7:38 — Janis Peterson, who is not on the roster, is having a nice game.
7:28 — Candice Adams just hit a 3. She is going to be a really good player for UNT.
7:25 — Mike Petersen talked quite a bit about how UNT will be bigger and more athletic. That’s pretty apparent watching UNT run through its fullcourt layup weave drill.
7:21 — Mike Petersen points to the side of the Super Pit that is mostly full and then points to the other side and said, essentially, that both sides need to be full. He also talked about UNT being the team that will play the hardest in Conference USA.
7:11 — This has actually turned out to be a pretty good turnout for a tip-off event. We are running through the drum line, step show portion of the festivities. Meh.
7:06 — Dave Barnett is in the house. Actually, he’s sitting right down the row here in the media seats.
7:00 — Jacob Holmen is here tonight. He’s talking with T.J. Taylor. People are starting to roll in. It looks like UNT will have a pretty good showing tonight in terms of the turnout.
I’m here at the Super Pit for UNT’s tip-off event for basketball season. The new scoreboard is pretty nice. It is also a whole lot brighter in here. One can also notice the improvement in the sound system.
I mentioned on the blog earlier what I will be looking for in what amounts to a rare peak at the UNT men’s team that has closed practice this season.
To review, UNT is depending on a whole bunch of guys who have not proven much of anything at the Division I level to carry its front court and replace Tony Mitchell and Roger Franklin.
Point guard Vertrail Vaughns will essentially make his UNT debut tonight.
The UNT women will also roll out a whole bunch of new players tonight.
I’ll post some thoughts on what goes on tonight in this post.
There are not a whole lot of people here yet with about 10 minutes left until this event is supposed to start.
