We are closing in on what will be a huge game for both UNT and Middle Tennessee on Saturday at Apogee Stadium. Both teams are still in the hunt to get to six wins and play in a bowl game at the end of the year.
Yeah, the loss to Tulane last week in its Conference USA opener hurt UNT, but the Mean Green isn’t toast yet. C-USA just isn’t that strong this year.
I sat down with old friend Adam Sparks of the Daily News Journal at C-USA basketball media days for an audio podcast. We have both been covering the Sun Belt and now C-USA for about 10 years. Sparks has great insight when it comes to MTSU’s program. Sparks has had some success with the podcast concept.
Here’s a link to what we have to say about this week’s game.
I’m also working on a story for tomorrow’s paper about UNT trying to walk a fine line between being aggressive, forcing turnovers and coming up with big hits and not going over the line and getting flagged.
Here’s an interesting stat:
UNT was the least penalized team in the Sun Belt last season both in terms of total penalties (40) and penalty yards (520). UNT is the most penalized team in C-USA this season both in terms of total penalties (40) and penalty yards (349).
Pick up tomorrow’s paper for more.
On the recruiting front, Waco offensive lineman Christian Beard is still sitting on a UNT offer and is picking up interest from more and more schools.
Received offer #6 from Toledo today!

And finally, a few people have wondered about what happened on the blocked field goal that really cost UNT in its loss to the Green Wave. Darion Monroe blocked the kick that was returned 62 yards by Derrick Strozier.
Well, I have the answer. Tulane included the play on the string of highlights they posted on YouTube. UNT just flat turned the Monroe loose right through the middle of the line. In case you want to watch the play without reliving everything that went wrong for UNT last week, a wide-angle view of the play is at the 3:02 mark with a close up right after that.
