I’m getting to the blog a little late today, but after doing a little running around to talk with people, here’s the news and notes of the day.
UNT’s focus is on a monster game against Rice on Thursday, but this is also a big week for the basketball programs. The new floor in the Super Pit is going down Thursday.
The old court will be taken out and the new one put in. I’m not sure how long the process will take, but I will try to go by and get some video, or at least a shot of it. I expect that UNT will likely do the same.
The new floor will complete the latest facility upgrades for the basketball programs. I mentioned a few weeks back a little about what the floor will look like, but to review:
– The lane will be green
– The baselines will also been green with North Texas and Mean Green pained on them.
– The green is supposed to be a better match for the new and brighter green color from the latest rebranding of UNT athletics and the school in general.
Practice was moved to late tonight, so I didn’t get a chance to catch up with Tony Benford, but I did talk with Chris Jones and Jordan Williams after they lifted. Both said they are excited about how things are progressing heading into Benford’s second season. UNT is going to push the ball this year.
UNT opens its exhibition season on Friday.
On the football front, I wrote about UNT entering uncharted territory in the form of a late-season big game in today’s paper
UNT doesn’t have a guy on the roster who has played in a big game on the college level other than Reggie Pegram from his time at Purdue and more and more, it looks like he will be out this week and maybe longer.
Dan McCarney has been there. UNT is leaning on its head coach to provide some perspective this week.
And finally, UNT has a huge game in soccer this week when it will host UTEP. UNT can clinch the second seed in Conference USA with a win. The game will be played on Thursday afternoon to avoid a time conflict with the UNT-Rice football game.
UNT is darn near unbeatable at home. A win this week in its regular season finale would really help UNT, which would have a bye and a better spot in the conference tournament bracket if it can take out the Miners.
