Wednesday night football, hoops notes

North Texas senior linebacker Zach Orr (35) blocks a field goal kick by Middle Tennessee freshman kicker Cody Clark on Saturday at Apogee Stadium.

It’s been a pretty eventful day in the land of the Mean and the Green.

First off, a couple of newsworthy tidbits:

– I haven’t had a chance to get a couple of basketball notes on the blog until now. First off, UNT’s plans to possibly add another game fell through. UNT is playing in the Coaches vs. Cancer event, which is the type of tournament that opens up the opportunity for teams to schedule extra games. UNT was trying to schedule Jackson State, but the plans fell through. And in other news, it looks like JUCO transfer forward Colin Voss will be out about a month after taking a knee to the thigh in practice. He should be ready to go when the season starts.

And in other news, UNT is also getting a ton of publicity this week. I hung out with DMN columnist Rick Gosselin at the UNT-MTSU game. He’s a great guy. I knew there was a good chance he would write a column on UNT later on, and sure enough he did. Unless you are living under a rock, you’ve seen it by now, but here’s a link. It’s great publicity for UNT.

Zach Orr was also recognized on Dave Campbell’s Texas Football’s all-midseason awards as the best linebacker in the state. DCTF is projecting UNT to make the postseason as well. Orr really is having a terrific year.

As far as what will be in the paper tomorrow and on our website late tonight, I spent some time this week working on a story on tight end Marcus Smith and his father. It’s a great personal story of overcoming obstacles and personal tragedy.
