Former Texas Tech quarterback Baker Mayfield is leaving Lubbock and is about to hit the transfer market.
To say that UNT fans are intrigued might be an understatement.
I talked to Lake Travis coach Hank Carter briefly this morning. Lake Travis is still in the playoffs. Carter hasn’t sat down with Mayfield to discuss his options.
I haven’t talked to Mayfield or anyone close to him other than Carter.
There are people who have told me UNT might be on the list of schools Mayfield is considering, but I have nothing approaching a solid source who says that is the case.
Mayfield threw for 2,315 yards and 12 touchdowns this season. He threw for 413 yards while leading Texas Tech to a win over SMU, which finished one win short of being bowl-eligible.
That accomplishment alone elevates him to favored status among the UNT faithful.
Would Mayfield consider transferring to UNT?
Again, we have no idea at this point.
What we do know is that UNT has an uncertain quarterback situation following the Heart of Dallas Bowl and the departure of senior Derek Thompson. JUCO quarterback Josh Greer is definitely on UNT’s radar.
We discussed where UNT stands in terms of its quarterback situation recently.
We should know more about where Mayfield may or may not fit in at some point over the next few days.
