Monday afternoon notes (Byrd, Marshall named C-USA POW)

Brandin Byrd and Mike Marshall both earned Player of the Week honors from Conference USA today.

Byrd posted the best game of his career — and one of the best in UNT history — while rolling up 251 yards in the Mean Green’s 42-10 win over Tulsa. Byrd had highest rushing total in Conference USA this year and shared Offensive Player of the Week honors with Southern Miss quarterback Nick Mullens. The USM freshman threw five touchdown passes in a win over UAB.

Marshall blocked a couple of punts, which is pretty amazing when you think about it. No one has ever blocked two punts in a game for UNT.

On the hoops front, I stopped by to visit with the UNT men, who were on their way out of town for a game at BYU tomorrow. We mentioned earlier in the year that this could be the game that would mark Kelvin Gaines UNT debut.

I asked and it doesn’t look like Gaines will play tomorrow. He is still recovering from foot surgery.

UNT is on a three-game winning streak after taking out Portland, Incarnate Word and Southeastern Louisiana.

Not exactly murders row, but teams have to start somewhere.

UNT can prove quite a bit if it can hang with BYU, which is 6-2 with its only losses coming to nationally ranked Iowa State and Wichita State. And BYU only lost to Iowa State by two.
