Monday night notes (hoops and football)

I swung by the Super Pit today to talk with Tony Benford and a couple of his players.

I will have a story about what they had to say in the paper heading into tomorrow’s rare morning game against Central Arkansas.

Benford and his players reiterated that they have been embarrassed by their recent performance — and specifically the beating handed to them by Stephen F. Austin on Sunday. Keith Coleman should be back tomorrow. Chris Jones is questionable.

UNT has had a tough go of if, but Benford and his players have stood up and said all the right things.

There is something to be said for that.

And on the recruiting front, former UNT target Christian Beard — and offensive lineman from Waco Midway — came off the board.

UNT was not looking for another offensive lineman. I swapped messages with Beard a couple of times. He seemed like a good guy and had a bit of a tough go of it. He committed to SMU, had his offer pulled and became a bit of a story for the wrong reasons. He found a home. Hope it goes well for him.

UNT should have a spot or two left.

We will have to see how things go from here.
