UNT-UCA running blog

Final — UNT 64-55. I will be back.

2:11 — Colin Voss and TJ Taylor just hit back-to-back baskets for UNT. The Mean Green is up 57-52. UNT might be OK from here.

3:42 — DeShone McClure just hit a pull-up in the lane for UCA. UNT is up 53-52 at the final media timeout. UCA has the ball with a chance to take the lead. Jordan Williams has 11 points for UNT.

4:08 — Jordan Williams just hit a big shot in the lane to put UNT up 53-50. UCA has the ball coming out of a timeout. Williams has 11 points for UNT. Williams, TJ Taylor and Colin Voss have all made a host of key plays down the stretch.

6:14 — UNT was down by as many as 3 before TJ Taylor hit a corner 3 to put UNT back up one. It is now 51-50 UNT with UCA headed to the line to try to tie this game up. Taylor has eight and is keeping UNT in this one late. Colin Voss has also been big late.

11:57 — UCA is on a run and just took a 42-40 lead on an Oliver Wells 3. UNT lucked out. UCA had a layup it missed that would have put it up four. Jordan Williams has nine points for UNT. The Mean Green has been back in the halfcourt again and is shooting 38 percent for the game.

15:48 — Well, this is getting interesting again. UCA has pulled to within 38-35 at the first media timeout of the second half. And the kids are doing the chicken dance. Jordan Williams has nine points for UNT. JW hit a 3 to put UNT up 37-27 before UCA answered.

Halftime — Got sidetracked there for minute. UNT rallied late in the first half and has a 30-23 lead at the break. UNT took control with a 12-2 run. No one has more than four points at halftime for UNT.

3:53 — UCA took a 17-16 lead, but UNT has pushed back ahead 22-18 behind a 6-1 run. Vertrail Vaughns, Jordan Williams and Keith Coleman all have four points for UNT. Both teams are a pretty brutal 7-for-21 from the field.

7:24 — UCA is on a 8-2 run and has pulled to within 16-15 midway through the first half. UNT gave up back-to-back 3s after grabbing a 14-7 lead.

10:31 — UNT is on a 7-2 run and has taken a 12-7 lead. Vertrail Vaughns is headed to the line for a couple of free throws. UNT is 5-for-10 from the field.

15:45 — UNT is up 5-3 at the first media timeout. Brandan Walton hit an early 3 after UCA had taken an early lead. There are more than 2,000 kids here today. In a side note, the pep band has apparently been told that the term “suck, which is part of the cheer they usually do after missed free throws is strictly verboten today.

Tipoff — I think this is the first time this year I have not heard the unofficial additional verbiage to the UNT fight song.

Today is a special day in UNT hoops.

It’s DISD Day, where UNT rounds up buses and buses full of elementary school students who fill section upon section of the Super Pit and turn it into a shrieking, pompom waving sea of insanity.

The timing is interesting considering UNT is coming off back-to-back 30 point beatings and a particularly demoralizing loss to Stephen F. Austin just a couple of days ago.

The question is how UNT will respond.

UNT should have Keith Coleman back today. Chris Jones might not go because of a bad back.

UCA is 2-5 with its two wins coming against Hendrix College and Troy.

This is another game in UNT’s renegade Southland Conference schedule.

Stay tuned.
