Wednesday afternoon notes, thoughts (UNT target at WKU, et cetera)

We haven’t talked about it in a while, but SMU transfer Jalen Jones has yet to decide where he will continue his college career.

Dallas AAU hoops magnate Erven Davis said about a month ago that UNT was in the hunt and that Western Kentucky was also on Jones list.

Well, let’s just say WKU is still in the hunt.

The Hilltoppers are a tradition-laden program and it sounded like Jones would like to get away from home this time around.

And the kicker — WKU will be in C-USA with UNT.

I’m not saying Jones will end up there, but it is interesting that he is visiting.

Stay tuned.

On the football front, a few UNT fans have already spotted this, but Carthage wide receiver Tee Goree was named the AP Class 3A all-state team this week.

Goree was a terrific get for UNT at a position of need.

There was another familiar name on the list as well. Argyle kicker Cole Hedlund, the son of UNT soccer coach John Hedlund was also on the team. Hedlund is headed to Arkansas.

I swung by football practice at the end of workouts to grab some material for the paper and the bowl special section.

Dan McCarney had mentioned this and it is worth reiterating. There is just no underestimating the value of bowl practices. UNT’s veteran guys had taken off at the end of workouts. It was just UNT’s young guys left getting in what amounts to another spring’s work of workouts before the Heart of Dallas Bowl.
