Big week for UNT in basketball

Both the UNT men and women will play key Conference USA series this week.

I just talked to UNT women’s coach Mike Petersen for a few minutes for our weekly notebook that will appear tomorrow. The UNT women will play at Florida International and Florida Atlantic, while the UNT men will play UAB and Middle Tennessee at home.

The week begins when the UNT women play FIU tomorrow in Miami, while the UNT men play UAB on Thursday.

Both teams are 1-3 in league play. We are still pretty far from panic time, but we are quickly getting to the point where UNT needs a whole lot of wins in a hurry to stay relevant in the league.

The UNT men have a tough road to travel. UAB is 12-5 and 1-2 in league play, while MTSU is 12-6 and 2-1.

UAB had won seven of eight before falling to MTSU in overtime, beating UTSA by 13 and falling to UTEP by two.

MTSU has beaten UTSA and UAB and fallen to UTEP in league play.

The UNT women will have a great opportunity in Florida. FIU is 2-2, while FAU is 1-3 in C-USA play.

Both UNT teams could even their conference record by the end of the week. If they don’t, it could be a long road to travel the rest of the way for the Mean Green.
