Johnson flips to UNT

Tillman Johnson, a strong side defensive end from Round Rock McNeil, has backed out of his commitment to Texas State and plans to sign with UNT.

Johnson said he made the decision after visiting UNT over the weekend.

“I liked the coaches, the facilities and the players,” Johnson said. “They had a good team and this past season, which had a lot to do with it.”

Johnson, who is 6-foot-1 and 243 pounds, had been committed to Texas State since last summer.

Johnson originally planned to visit both schools before making a final decision, but said Sunday night that he will cancel his visit to Texas State next weekend.

UNT offensive coordinator Mike Canales recruited Johnson.

New Mexico State also offered Johnson a scholarship. He was a first-team All-District 16-5A selection last season.

UNT finished 9-4 and beat UNLV in the Heart of Dallas Bowl on New Year’s Day.
