Late-night hoops thoughts

The UNT women’s hoops team had a bit of a tough go tonight, falling to Tulsa 79-63.

That looks pretty ugly on paper, but UNT was only down one early in the second half before Tulsa went to the line over and over and over again.

The Golden Hurricane shot 39 free throws and went on a huge run in the second half. A 13-3 surge turned into a 23-9 burst.

Mike Petersen said the issue was that UNT didn’t do a good job of defending without fouling.

UNT also shot the ball poorly from the 3-point arc, going 5-for-23.

Petersen said the book is out on UNT. Everyone is going to pack it in and let UNT hoist it up from the perimeter. UNT got good looks, but didn’t hit many. Laura McCoy, Janis Peterson and Candice Adams combined to go 2-for-14 from 3. UNT isn’t going to beat many teams when it shoots like that.

Alexis Hyder, Acheil Tac and Briesha Wynn — UNT’s post trio — combined for 39 points and shot it well.

UNT also look pretty good care of the ball, turning it over just 14 times.

Those positives didn’t result in a win, largely because UNT couldn’t keep Tulsa off the stripe.

UNT fell to 2-5 in Conference USA play and has some work to do if it wants to improve its stake heading into the Conference USA tournament.
