Sunday night notes (catching up with Garrett Davis, T-Mitch back to the NBA)

We have spent some time talking UNT men’s hoops over the last few days, but there is always something else going on. And thus, the Sunday night notes.

The big news tidbit of the day is that Tony Mitchell appears to be headed back to the NBA to rejoin the Pistons this week …

The Kobe Beef might not sound like a highly respected NBA source, but it is.

Mitchell played in the D League for a few games and showed flashes of his potential. Hopefully, he will get a chance to play more when he rejoins the Pistons.

On the football front, there has been some speculation on the players UNT might have to work hard to hang on to in the days leading up to signing day. Red Oak cornerback Garrett Davis is at the top of the list.

Davis said Sunday night that he is firm in his commitment to UNT.

“I am still signing with UNT,” Davis said. “I want to play to where I am not a backup plan.”

On the coaching front, watch this week’s national convention for any potential movement involving UNT assistants.

I don’t have inside knowledge that UNT is in danger of losing anyone unless Mike Canales gets a shot at the UAB job (and I hope he does). One never knows though. UNT has some successful assistants with skins on the wall (Canales, Mike Simmonds) and some young guys on their way up (Ryan Walters, Tommy Perry) who could be attractive targets for teams looking to fill spots on their staff.

That bowl win certainly will look good on those guys’ resumes.

Another player found a home this weekend who had some interest in UNT. Oklahoma cornerback Trey Betts is headed to Missouri State:
